Girl (2020)

Watch Girl | Prime Video

In his feature film debut as both writer/director Chad Faust also takes on the role as cast member in the film Girl. It stars Bella Thorne (The Duff, Scream: The Series) as a daughter seeking revenge on her estranged father; unbeknownst to her though someone has already carried out the deed just upon her arrival. In what can only be described as the smallest, run down POS town in the middle of no one cares, there is one man that controls it all and that is the Sheriff, played by Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler, Sin City). Opposed to leaving Thorne decides to find out what happened to her “daddy” and that is when she get herself stuck in the Sheriff’s crosshairs.

Along with Rourke is Faust who together make up a seedy, vicious duo on the hunt for stored away cash. The plot itself is very loosely tied together adding in other characters to fill out the story and give it some purpose. Thorne plays a scorned vigilante seeking the truth but unfortunately the lack of story waters down her performance. Faust and Rourke play their roles adequately but even for Rourke it was luck luster and again there did not seem to be any real motivation behind the roles. The reasoning behind Thorne’s further actions after discovering her father also seemed completely irrational which only took away from the film. The third act of the film was more enjoyable than the rest but with loosely tied sub plots it felt as if Faust was reaching to give the entire film some sort of context or actual meaning.

Unfortunately for Faust he could not get the stars to align to make this a successful outing but does show a flare for setting a mood in a scene and the ability to capture some raw emotion, a credit as well to Thorne.
